According to a 2023 study, 30% of manufacturing in the US still have not embraced lean manufacturing. Post Pandemic, more decision makers are looking to tech solutions for supply chain and workforce issues. Unfortunately, throwing technology at problems can be often unsuccessful and costly. The wrong choice and ā€œHouston we have a problem!ā€ For the last several years, Industry 4.0, Digital Roadmapping, Smart Manufacturing, Automation words have been thrown at these decision makers. Leaving thoughts like:

  • what does that mean?
  • how much is that gonna cost?
  • how long will it take?
  • are we going to be left behind?
  • Lean processes continuous improvementā€¦ sounds expensive.
  • Small shopā€¦ Donā€™t have the budget of an OEM or Tier 1!
  • Who is ready to take the leap?
  • Will this take away jobs?
  • Can we fill in space left by the skills gap?
  • Now AI?Ā  Cobots? AGVs? Skynet?

In this drive for innovation, intentional consideration for internal processes, people, and budget is a must. Whether building a rocketship or a playground, take time to map out the big picture and then start with a small win! Sometimes that small victory can fund the next phase. Sometimes it can launch enthusiasm for further innovation. A small change can make an historic difference! And a technical collaborator can propel your project even further.

Take the Fisher Space Pen, for instance, a small instrument that help get the US to the moon.Ā  Back when calculations in space had to be done by hand, finding the correct writing instrument was problematic. Traditional ball point pens leaked and did not work efficiently in extreme conditions. The pencil wood was flammable, and the graphite lead put dust in the instruments. A pen salesman named Paul Fisher created a zero gravity pen designed to work at any angle in extreme conditions on most surfaces without flaking or burning up like a pencil.Ā  After NASA’s successful walk on the moon, it is said that Russia bought the Fisher pens by the cases. Newer innovative Fisher pens are space flights today. Edward Bulwer-Lytton said it best ā€œthe pen is mightier than the sword.ā€
